Van Cleef & Arpels: Time Is More Than a Measurement | Rainer Bernard Interview

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Hybris Mechanica Ultra Thin Minute Repeater Tourbillon is the world’s thinnest automatic minute repeater tourbillon. In this WatchAdvisor 4K video, Alexander Linz once again sits down with Matthieu Sauret, Product & Heritage Director at Jaeger-LeCoultre, to explore - and hear - one of the most extraordinary mechanical watches of 2026. Reference Q13125S2 is limited to just ten pieces. The numbers alone seem almost contradictory: an automatic movement combining a fully integrated minute repeater and a one-minute flying tourbillon, yet measuring only 5 mm in height. The complete 18K pink-gold watch is just 8.25 mm thick and 41.4 mm in diameter. This should not fit. And yet it does. At its heart is Jaeger-LeCoultre’s automatic manufacture Calibre 362, originally introduced in 2014 and radically reinterpreted for this new open-worked Hybris Mechanica creation. Comprising 593 components and 72 jewels, it operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and provides a power reserve of 42 hours. The assembly of this movement alone requires seven weeks. Rather than stacking the minute repeater onto an existing base movement, Jaeger-LeCoultre designed Calibre 362 as a completely integrated construction. Its 187-part striking mechanism occupies approximately one third of the calibre’s volume and incorporates one-piece square-profile gongs, articulated trebuchet hammers and the Manufacture’s patented silent time-lapse reduction system. The latter dramatically reduces the normally awkward pause between the hour and minute chimes when no quarter-hour needs to be struck. The result is a more natural, fluid and uninterrupted acoustic sequence. Then there is the fully flying one-minute tourbillon. Its 59 components weigh just 0.248 grams. By eliminating the conventional upper bridge and upper cage, Jaeger-LeCoultre reduced both height and visual mass. Even the balance wheel is flying, mounted directly on a ceramic ball bearing and fitted with a patented S-shaped hairspring developed specifically for this construction. Automatic winding is provided by a peripheral oscillating weight that travels around the outside of the calibre rather than sitting above it. Mounted on 36 ceramic ball bearings, it winds efficiently in both directions while adding no additional height and leaving the movement visible from both sides. The transparency goes far beyond conventional skeletonisation. Three structural bridges are made from sapphire crystal, allowing the operating sequence of the minute repeater - including its snails, racks, governor and hammers - to be observed in motion. Because rubies cannot be set directly into sapphire, eleven jewels are secured in specially developed 18K pink-gold chatons. The sapphire bridges are polished and receive anti-reflective as well as anti-static treatments. Across eight specialised workshops, Jaeger-LeCoultre applies 14 different decorative techniques to the calibre and case. The movement incorporates 60 individually hand-bevelled components and no fewer than 48 internal angles. Polishing, perlage, Côtes de Genève, straight graining, snailing, brushing, diamond polishing and hand-guillochage all contribute to an architecture that is as visually expressive as it is technically demanding. An open-worked 18K white-gold dial ring frames the mechanism. The peripheral rotor is dressed with an 18K pink-gold cover, hand-guillochéd by Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Métiers Rares™ artisans. Even the 60-part case had to be specifically engineered around Calibre 362. Instead of a conventional minute-repeater slide, the watch uses a patented retractable push-piece at 10 o’clock, together with a second button at 8 o’clock that locks and releases the striking mechanism. World’s Thinnest Automatic Minute Repeater Tourbillon — JLC Hybris Mechanica | 4K

The €520,000 A. Lange & Söhne LANGE 1 TOURBILLON PERPETUAL CALENDAR “Lumen” - Reference 720.035FE - is limited to just 50 pieces worldwide. WatchAdvisor brings you exceptionally close to this extraordinary timepiece in 4K. Some watches are reviewed. Others are simply encountered. This is deliberately not a conventional technical review. There is no attempt to turn the watch into a recital of specifications or to hide it behind horological grandstanding. Instead, Alexander Linz spends almost 23 minutes sharing the rare privilege of holding, exploring and quietly experiencing this remarkable A. Lange & Söhne creation - almost as if it were in your own hands. Most collectors will never own one. Most will never even see one in the wild. This video may therefore be the closest many of us will ever get to the LANGE 1 TOURBILLON PERPETUAL CALENDAR “Lumen”. And yet, behind its almost otherworldly appearance lies some very serious watchmaking. The 41.9 mm case is crafted from 950 platinum and measures 13.0 mm in height. Inside is the newly developed self-winding Lange manufacture calibre L225.1: a movement comprising 685 individual parts, 74 jewels, six screwed gold chatons and a diamond endstone. It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of up to 50 hours. Its central rotor is made from black-rhodiumed 18-carat white gold and fitted with a centrifugal mass in 950 platinum. The one-minute tourbillon incorporates Lange’s patented stop-seconds mechanism, allowing the balance inside the rotating tourbillon cage to be stopped so that the watch can be set with one-second precision. The perpetual calendar combines an instantaneously switching outsize date, a retrograde day-of-week indication, a rotating peripheral month ring and a leap-year display. Provided the watch continues running, the calendar will not require a manual correction until 1 March 2100. Its moon-phase display incorporates a day/night indication and deviates from the true lunar cycle by only one day after 122.6 years. The “Lumen” concept transforms all of this after dark. A semi-transparent, coated sapphire-crystal dial allows UV light to charge the luminous displays beneath it. The outsize date, peripheral month indication, leap-year display, hands, scales and moon-phase display all become visible in darkness, creating an entirely different expression of the familiar LANGE 1 architecture. Turn the watch over and the spectacle continues: black-polished steel tourbillon and intermediate-wheel cocks, hand-engraved stars and a shooting star, meticulously finished bridges, plates, levers and wheels - all decorated and assembled by hand according to Lange’s exacting standards. Only 50 examples will exist. Each carries its individual edition number and is delivered on a hand-stitched black alligator strap with a deployant quick-lock buckle in 950 platinum. No specification sheet can fully explain the fascination of having such a watch in your hands. So turn down the lights, select 4K and take your time. Forget anything else what you have seen so far. The Reflection the Cartier looks futuristic and sculptural. The bangle watch represents a construction of rectangular parts which are connected to each other in an irregular manner and have spaces between them. Its components are polished to the extent that they are reflecting the light like a mirror. So much so, it looks like the light would come from inside of the bracelet. New manufacture calibre LF275.01 Inside beats the LF275.01 automatic, offering 72 hours of power reserve at 4 Hz (28,800 vph). It uses an off-centered micro-rotor winding system with a 950 platinum oscillating weight, plus a unidirectional ball bearing designed to improve resistance to shocks and vibrations. Bridges feature a horizontal satin finish with ruthenium treatment, and key elements of the micro-rotor bridge are hand-finished and mirror polished.  Dial and case details that matter The dial is slate grey with powder-grey transfers and discreet “Sport Traveller” text; the white-gold hands and indexes carry light green Super-LumiNova for legibility day and night.
