Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time
The one and only question I ask when I get to see a new watch that was conceived for traveling is: Can I, when traveling through timezones with changing zone-times, adjust my local time without loosing the correct indicated minutes and seconds? In case of the new Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time you can. The watch will independently indicate you your home-time and the date is of course linked to the local time.
You think every ticking travel companion does this? Unfortunately not! I could name you several really expensive watches that had not been thought through correctly …
The description of the new developed 5110 DT calibre tells us the following:
… “The hours hand indicates the local timezone corresponding to the user’s current location, while the hand tipped with a triangular arrow shows the time in a reference timezone, generally known as “home time”. A 12-hour display, adjustable via the crown in both directions (position 1: local time, independent jumping adjustment; position 2: home time, dragging adjustment of both timezones and minutes), along with a day/night indication set to home time, and a pointer-type date display, adjusted and secured via a screw-lock pusher at 4 o’clock and synchronised with local time.” …
So if understand this correctly the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time meets the horological hurdle of being a practical wristwatch for traveling.
Everything else simply is not usable when you travel. If you loose the indicated minutes and seconds when trying to set your local time according to your new zone-time, simply forget the watch. The mechanism of the watch must enable you to set the hours in one-hor-steps while the minutes and seconds continue to run.
If I travel from Vienna to New York, the only thing I need to do is pull out the crown and turn back the hour-hand in six single steps. Lock the crown again and enjoy New York …
