As time goes by…

It is almost 20 years ago, that A. Lange & Söhne presented its “Datograph” hand wound chronograph. Since then the “Datograph” became a major pillar of the brand and an iconic wristwatch. Because of its lucid dial architecture, the first “Datograph” in 1999 quickly became a prized collectible among design purists. In terms of movement design and finishing there is nothing comparable on the market.

I invite you to discover the latest addition to the “Datograph” collection the “Datograph Up/Down Lumen”.

The “Datograph Up/Down Lumen” is a contemporary reinterpretation of this exceptional chronograph. The stop-watch is a time-piece that expresses stringent clarity by day and becomes a luminous guide at night.

A. Lange & Söhne explained me the technical concept: “Alexander it is based on a sapphire-crystal dial with a semitransparent coating. It filters out visible light and all but conceals the inner workings of the watch. But in bright surroundings, it candidly reveals the mechanism of the Lange outsize date as well as the hand-decorated plate. At the same time, the coating is permeable to energy-rich UV light that charges the luminous pigments on the displays. So, it is precisely legible and operable even in the dark. The darker the surroundings, the brighter the indications glow in a green hue that the human eye perceives as very agreeable.”

That´s a nice and humble description… Let me resume it in just one word: Stunning!

The sapphire-crystal case-back exposes the typical and impressive beauty of another lavishly finished A. Lange & Söhne movement, the manually wound calibre L951.7.

The chronograph-calibre is composed of a total of 454 parts. Apart from the outsize date, it features a precisely jumping minute counter as well as a stop mechanism with a Flyback-function. A single actuation of the reset-push-piece at “4 o’clock” stops an ongoing measurement, resets the chronograph hands to zero, and starts a new measurement. Additionally, the watch features an Up/Down indication that displays the state of wind within the range of the 60-hour power reserve. Its hand is positioned in a small display at “6 o'clock”.

End of 2018, the A. Lange & Söhne family now welcomes the “Datograph Up/Down Lumen” as a new collector’s timepiece.

Did you know, that the “Datograph Up/Down Lumen” is also A. Lange & Söhne’s fourth “Lumen” model? This small series was launched in 2010 with the “Zeitwerk Luminous”. It was followed in 2013 by the “Grand Lange 1 Lumen” and in 2016 by the “Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase Lumen”. All of the watches mentioned are limited-editions cased in platinum.

Only 200 pieces of the “Datograph Up/Down Lumen” edition will be manufactured.
