Super Turtle

By: Roger Ruegger

With the new DS Super PH2000M collection, Certina has just doubled the water resistance of its Super PH models to 2,000 meters (PH stands for “hydrostatic pressure” in French, DS for “Double Security”), while keeping the price comparatively low at $1,440: In addition to the increased water resistance, the Swiss brand went with an integrated helium release valve, a ceramic bezel insert and titanium case and bracelet (both grade 2), bringing the weight of the 43-mm dive watch down to 130 grams.

Certina went with an arrow-shaped minute hand (instead of the traditional sword hand) for the new DS Super PH2000M.

Like its predecessors with 500 and 1,000 meter water resistance, the Super PH2000M’s unidirectional ceramic bezel uses the brand’s secure push-to-turn system, which means the bezel can only be moved (60 clicks) when pushed down simultaneously.

Available in four colorways, each model comes with a either a blue fabric strap (for the version with white dial, Ref. C050.607.44.011.02) or an additional rubber strap (for the three remaining dial options) alongside the titanium bracelet. Movement is Swatch Group’s Powermatic 80 with Nivachron balance spring and 80-hour power reserve.

The titanium case is much more angular and features an automatic helium release valve at 9 o'clock.

The version shown here is the fifth special edition made in collaboration with the Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC). Founded in 1959, the Florida-based NPO is one of the world’s oldest sea turtle conservation organizations, “dedicated to protecting endangered sea turtles and their habitats through research, education and conservation programs across the globe.” It is a limited edition of 1,959 pieces and comes with a turquoise dial paired with a black ceramic bezel and a turquoise rubber strap. Instead of Certina’s regular turtle, the STC Limited Edition (C050.607.44.041.10) comes with the organization’s logo on the caseback, including a “1 of 1959” and an additional line of text on the dial (“Limited Edition”).

Alternatively, the DS Super PH2000M is also available with a black dial with vintage lume (Ref. C050.607.44.051.02), a white dial with blue bezel (Ref. C050.607.44.011.02) or yellow dial (Ref. C050.607.44.361.02), but the STC edition is the only one with a gradient dial with sunray finish (and the dedicated caseback).
