The 46.5-mm Big Pilot Perpetual Calendar (Ref. IW505801) is the first publicly available watch from IWC using the brand’s proprietary Ceralume luminous ceramic technology (that had already created quite a buzz when it was first announced in 2024 with a 41-mm chronograph concept watch).
The significantly larger and more complicated production model is limited to 250 pieces and completely white. In the dark, the entire watch glows in a vivid blue hue for more than 24 hours.
Ceralume is the result of a multi-year development effort by IWC’s engineering division XPL (Experimental), which was supported by experts from RC Tritec. While conventional white ceramic is created by mixing zirconium oxide with other metallic oxides, luminous ceramic required a blend of ceramic powders and Super-Luminova pigments. According to IWC, the main challenge was “to achieve a completely homogeneous mixture of these raw materials, which have different particle sizes.” To do this, IWC came up with a dedicated ball-milling process: Ceramic powders and Super-Luminova pigments are placed in a rotating cylindrical drum partially filled with small balls. As the drum spins, the balls are lifted and then dropped in a cascading motion, using both impact and attrition to break down the mixture into a finer, more homogeneous powder.
The Big Pilot Perpetual Calendar is powered by IWC’s 52616 caliber with Pellaton winding system and a power reserve of 168 hours (7 days). And even the “Probus Scafusia” medallion integrated into the rotor is made of Super-Luminova and visible through the transparent sapphire glass case back.
