Girard-Perregaux Minute Repeater Flying Bridges

By: Roger Ruegger

In 1996, Girard-Perregaux combined a minute repeater and tourbillon for the first time. The new Minute Repeater Flying Bridges (Ref. 99840-52-2013-5CC) aims to increase acoustic performance and offers a water resistance of 30 m. In addition, the watch combines a tourbillon and a micro-rotor winding mechanism within an open-worked movement that is based on the Swiss watchmaker’s Three Bridges signature movement architecture.

“The openworking of the calibre is both an aesthetic and functional choice. While revealing the movement’s delicate inner workings, its airy structure also ensures optimal resonance. The sound is almost entirely unimpeded as it reverberates inside the case.”

A domed sapphire crystal on both sides of the 46-mm case is used to amplify the melody produced by the hammers striking the gongs on the dial side. To avoid any noise or interference that might be detrimental to sound purity, the gongs and the gong stud are made from a single piece of metal, and the centrifugal strikework regulator has been moved to the back of the movement. In addition, the white gold micro-rotor of the new movement oscillates in complete silence.

Girard-Perregaux’ Cal. GP9530 is slightly different take on the Three Bridges architecture, the brand’s signature since the mid-1800s: In this version, the historical aesthetic has been reinterpreted with the third bridge having been positioned at the rear of the movement.

The movement consists of 475 parts, and no less than 1,340 hand-polished chamfers (including 295 interior angles), and operates at a frequency of 21,600 vph. Designed, developed and assembled in-house, it combines a minute repeater, a tourbillon and a new self-winding system with micro-rotor (and offers 60 hours of power reserve when fully wound). Its assembly and decoration require nearly 440 hours of work, the plate and bridges are made of titanium. While not limited, Girard-Perregaux aims to make about 8 pieces per year.
