Inspired by a topographic map, the idea was to further highlight and dramatize the three-dimensional nature of the dial by having each level painted in a slightly different tone. The highest peaks on the dial represent the twelve hour markers and are hand-painted in a light gray color, with each successive lower layer getting darker. Across sixty-seven dial plates and nine vertical layers, the dial now shifts from light gray to a deep black. It takes around 6 hours to assemble a single dial, and the plates can be prone to bending when pressed together, meaning the entire dial has to be discarded.
