The Lange 1 was originally launched on October 24, 1994, marking the rebirth of A. Lange & Söhne in the modern era. Fast forward to last year, the brand celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special release on the exact same date. As part of this milestone, A. Lange & Söhne introduced four variations of the watch, with two different case materials. In this article, we focus on the platinum version with a black onyx dial.
Design & Craftsmanship
Lange & Söhne introduced the new LANGE 1 in platinum, featuring a 38.5mm diameter case with a thickness of 10mm. The watch maintains its iconic asymmetrical dial layout, which has captivated watch enthusiasts for decades. A smaller 36.8mm version also exists, but our focus remains on the standard size in platinum.
The onyx dial is a remarkable highlight, making this timepiece visually distinctive. Onyx, a gemstone rarely used in watchmaking, enhances the deep black aesthetic, complementing the 925 silver dial base. This combination creates a striking contrast, elevating the watch’s elegance.
Manual Winding: A Ritual of Passion
Unlike automatic watches, the LANGE 1 features a manually wound movement. Some may consider this a drawback, but many collectors cherish the ritual of winding their watch. The timepiece offers a 72-hour power reserve, achieved through a double barrel system.
The power reserve indicator, located on the dial, includes German inscriptions: “AUF” (up) and “AB” (down), a signature detail of A. Lange & Söhne watches. As you wind the watch, you can see the power reserve indicator move — adding an interactive and tactile experience to this masterpiece.
Horological Excellence in Every Detail
The LANGE 1 is powered by the caliber L121.1, a movement that exemplifies A. Lange & Söhne’s dedication to Haute Horlogerie. Some key features include:
The instantaneous date change mechanism showcases A. Lange’s engineering prowess. The date advances precisely at midnight or can be adjusted manually via a pusher at 10 o’clock.
Case & Strap: A Blend of Tradition and Luxury
The watch case is crafted from 950 platinum, a material that exudes prestige and durability. The timepiece is paired with a hand-stitched alligator leather strap with a platinum pin buckle, ensuring both comfort and refinement.
Notably, the case production is handled by SUG (Sächsische Uhrentechnologie GmbH Glashütte), a renowned German case manufacturer that collaborates with A. Lange & Söhne.
A Collector’s Treasure
Limited to just 300 pieces, this LANGE 1 is destined to become a highly sought-after collector’s item.
Despite being released in 2023, the platinum LANGE 1 remains a horological marvel. It encapsulates the artistry, engineering, and tradition that define A. Lange & Söhne.
If you appreciate fine watchmaking, this piece is a testament to craftsmanship and timeless design.
